Three Tips for Your Portfolio

Do you want to increase your chances of landing your dream job? Consider making an impressive portfolio.

A portfolio is not just a compilation of your work samples. It represents your skills and qualifications—your professional career.

Creating a portfolio can be exhausting as it requires time in collating accomplished works, summarizing achievements, and other important information that market oneself. If you are a web designer who provides web design services or who wants to work for a web design company, a portfolio is a must-have since your future employer will carefully examine your designs as its basis in hiring you.

So what is a good portfolio? There can be various answers for this question. However, one thing is for sure: a portfolio can only be as impressive as its contents. Here are some tips to help you in creating your portfolio.

1.)    Offer something fresh.
In today’s highly competitive market, your potential employer may be looking for something that distinguishes you from other web designers. Thus, offer something fresh. Aside from presenting work samples showcasing latest website designs, present those that you think sets your works apart from other designers. Doing so not only gives your prospective client an impression that you are up-to-date when it comes to trends but you are also capable of coming up with unique designs.  Also, you can customize your portfolio to enhance its presentation (e.g., 3D portfolio) and to capture attention.

2.)    Avoid over presenting.
Your prospective employer or client may have little time to read the information you provided in your portfolio and may tend to go directly to the essentials, such as your designs, and evaluate how you can contribute to their web design services. Therefore, it is important to make your portfolio as concise as possible. Remove unnecessary information that does not reflect your career objective such as extracurricular activities that may not be in line with web designing. Moreover, include only the best of your designs or those with themes that show the kind of industry you want to get hired to do.

3.)    Have others look at your works/portfolio.
Your portfolio must be impeccable, to say the least, because again it reflects your skills and qualifications.  Have others look at your works for some constructive criticism. Doing so can make you realize some things that you forgot to include or you should remove. Furthermore, they can spot mistakes such as errors in personal information, wrong grammar in your descriptions, etc. They can also note areas of improvement.

Overall, potential employers, who are mostly web design companies, will examine your portfolio as a basis for your ability to provide web design services. The tips presented above can be advantageous for your application as they provide an effective way of showcasing your works.

Think of your portfolio as your passport to amazing opportunities. Thus, it is encouraged that you come up with one that speaks on your behalf and what you can offer as a company’s future employee.
